Have we turned materialistic?, Are we getting compelled by situations, circumstances? Are we so afraid to face life? Why do we need to compromise? Compromise on the work we do , compromise on the quality of life we lead and like to lead............. and the list goes on and on and on....
Had an interesting discussion about the public sector undertakings ( PSU's) with some of my colleagues. The government boasts of the Navratnas - The nine jewels which it created, but never talks about the 90 such ratnas it could have created which we were not able to. This eventually resulted in people running away to the high paying "lucrative jobs" . This went on and on and finally today we reached a stage where knowledge or the creator is no longer given their enough due but people using it have been on a high. A professor in the best of grad colleges gets far less than what his students earn. People working in the govt organisations doing some meaningful work resulting in value addition are financially undernourished compared to one sitting in on of the BPO organisations doing nothing but e-mail management. And to worsen the things the latter commands much respect in the so called "society" than the former. Are we in the age of value dilution? Are we in the age of leading meaningless, moral-less, lives where one earns his bread just because he is good at copying others idea without his knowledge?
We have become enough materialistic to compromise on each and everything. Money has become more important than any other thing. And we are running behind it until we are short of our breath. Family pressure, peer pressure, a feel of guilt within for the lack of something which you can is making for all this to happen. Me and many others despite being aware of all this are leading a life of compromise.
Hope to try to create a place where our next generations lead a meaningful life valuing mind over money.

My Friend...random thoughts from my mind. First the ugly truth,no doubt this is the age of materialism.."Kali-Yuga". Money is not God...but no lesser even, these days.
But I beleive there is light at end of every tunnel. While my experience in industry helped my realize the power of content...but my journey in the back office has made me feel the improtance of packaging. The content is important but the cover is equally relevant in this age of advertising and differentiation.
On value, it depends on how you define it. For some its about always being in the front seat while for some its about making others life more easier and facilitating. For some it might be treading along the time tested paths while for others it might be in experimenting and trying to create something out of nothing.
On utility of pulic sector or for that matter any industry that has matured over time would say that all lies in the perpective you are viewing it from....they contine to add value from a macro angle and have proved themselves on commercial parameters as well. But on a micro platform besides the obvious contraints of "M" their structures offer little scope for creativity.
And there lies the answer...reason for huge growth in sunrise sub-sectors of growing service industry umbrella..
Lastly would just say, be it any Yuga...price is a function of demand and supply and I beleive its always money chasing creative/requisite talent...rather being the other way round...
